Open source Java by Apache

ZDnet is reporting that Apache is going to create, from scratch, an open source implementation of J2SE, and has Sun's approval to do so

The implementation which is (at the moment) welcomed by Sun, might even have Sun helping them out. Though don't get too excited analysts are expecting it to take 3-5 years

this doesn't seem like such a ringing endorsement from sun:

and of course hani has something to say about this:

After reading those articles, I too am sorta wondering, why? Why does j2se need to be open source, it is free... It just needs to be compatable.

By no ways am i saying open source is the way in the next statment- but if one of the big issues is compatability to solve this one of the best ways is to throw developers and testers at it. Which is something you can do with Open source. But to alomost play devils advocate with myself Sun do release a full weekly source and binary snapshots of Mustang (J2SE 6) at http://mustang.dev.java.net/ and welcome contributions. Wouldnt it be better if everyone contributed to this instead? Actually with Sun welcoming reviews and contributes why are we having the Apache implementation?
