Google maps java app on your mobile

The other day we were stuck in a HUGE traffic jam in London. We just happened to be heading over to Earls Court in rush hour. Well with the taxi moving 2 metres in 10 minutes we decided to walk instead. We didn't know our way, but the London pedestrian is always willing to help contary to what some people say. Really though what I could of done with (except for heading off earlier to avoid the traffic) is Google maps. So as usual now that I don't need it I've found a J2ME program to stick on your mobile from Google to access their maps.

You'll need to check that your phone is compatible though my Sony Ericsson W810i wasn't on there it ran fine as it works with most Java-enabled (J2ME) mobile phone. The map actually works really well and you can see an online demo here. What is lacking at the moment is the ability to work with a GPS device, currently Google Maps doesn't use any GPS technology even if your phone has it. You can do all the usual maps functions like directions from a to b, find a Domino's pizza etc. So if you are an occasional traveller who can't be bothered to find out were they are going before hand this might be for you.

If you are on Orange, their on-phone intranet thing has a section called 'out and about' that will show you a pan/zoom map centered on where you are (though you can also centre it to an address). It can then direct you to nearest cash points etc. etc.
It's not google maps or anything, but it's much lighter weight and works on my SE P900 unlike google maps (despite an attempt).

how do you use it with a n70 locked to 3. do you need gprs because i don't think 3 has gprs only planet 3 if so this is a dissapointment because i really would like this feature.

@nonone, weather the phone is locked shouldnt be a problem i would of thought. You're just installing a Java app that conencts to the web via your phones internet settings. Have you managed to install it and its not working, or won't it even install?
I love GoogleMaps on my Treo. In fact, the ability to copy an address from my email and paste it into GoogleMaps all on my phone has come in handy more than a few times.

Helped me catch a cabbie taking the long way 'round once, too. Turned a 9 mile trip into close to 20.

I cannot make it run on my w810i. When downloading my cell phone stops with th error message "invvalid program". Maybe we have been running different versions?

Hey Ren

I experience the exact same problem. Neither through the Opera Mini browser or through the internal W810i browser it seems to work my way. Darn... :-|
