Here's a wild thought!
When Macromedia took over Allaire then did some mild updates to Homesite then pretty much killed the development - fair play, they did have Dreamweaver afterall.
So if all goes well "could" enough support get HS+ 5.5 development started again (surely with Adobes abundance cash then could through some at HS) or would it now mean total death for the ageing editor?
Update: Just noticed Nick Bradbury has had the Same thought, with some good comments posted.
a.k.a Another Adobe and Macromdia post
So its coming to the end of the day in the UK soon (6:15pmish here now) and i realised that for the first time in ages i hadnt fired up FeedDemon all day WOW - last time that happens. So incase you havent heard there's gonna be a huge merger between Macromedia and Adobe - for more info check out the mini site at www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/invrelations/adobeandmacromedia.html. If you are looking for a more personal touch in finding out what this means you NEED to check out Mike Chamber recent blog entry.
Well i could go on about relative links out there but MXNA and Goog have done that well with all the post stating their concerns.
One big concern i have that doesnt seem to of been addressed that well anywere is the community focus. With the likes of of all the MM staff blogs which are an invaluable resource, there participation on mailing lists right down to MXNA? What will come of this?
I just resurected some snippets of mine from November 2003. The snippets are the complete set of Fusedoc tags originally for Homesite 5.5+.
I've now recreated the whole set for CFE
To instal either version just create a new folder called "FuseDoc" in your Snippets folder and unzip to there.
If you don't know where you snippets foler is for CFE then goto: Window » Preference » CFEclipse » Path to Snippets directory
I've never heavily used RegEx find/replaces (which up to this point makes me wonder how?) so I didn't properly take in Adam Howitt's post about Simplifying Form Validation with Eclipse Backreferences first time round. If i did i could of saved myself some time last week...thats another story.
Not only does it show the power of CFE (as well as other editors) but is shows the power of RegEx find and replace.
The alternative title for this was going to be "Own a bit of history", but i thought the first was a bit more attention grabbing. Either way i'm not lying. Thats right, you can download Homesite for free, but not the MM version. Actually its not the Allaire version but the original by Nick Bradbuy, version 1.2. So if you are looking for a HTML editor for Windows 95 (i tried it on my XP machine but with not luck), you can go here to download it.
P.S. if anyone does actually get this running on a Windows 95 machine i'd love to see a screen dump.
WooHoo, MM have just released a TechNote titled, Double-clicking in the Files tab moves focus to root node. It deals with one problem that anyone who uses HS have come across.
Along with this there has also been a couple of other TechNotes released:
Exporting FTP and RDS settings
HomeSite/ColdFusion Studio 5 causes a 'Class not registered' error
HomeSite 5.x: Error when using Visual Source Safe with HomeSite/HomeSite+ on Windows Server 2003
A user called "Jay" has made post there stating Homesite support is still available, but at $200.
See the post at http://webforums.macromedia.com/homesite/messageview.cfm?catid=91&threadid=741861
Ok before i get flamed/abused and slapped with a fish, this is from a post on the Macromedia Forums. But aparently "DISQMAN" man has been trying for a few days to get through to macromedia.com, then when he did he was told that they no longer supported Homesite. You can read the post at the MM forums.
It's probably a troll post, at the end of the day the HS site isnt saing anything yet. But its an American numbers and im at work so i cant even entertain the idea that is being put forward and try calling.
What with the state of the HS forum and the rumours its probably not worth believing!
Ive never been an overly huge fan of fusedocs for Fusebox, mainly for all the coding that goes into them (Hmmmm might be laziness coming through there). So with that in mind i decided to help myself out and create a set of Snippets incorporating the "variables" feature from Homesite+ 5.5, making development of them quicker and even easier.
You can download them at http://www.andyjarrett.co.uk/downloads/FuseDoc-HS.zip, to instal just create a new folder called "FuseDoc" in your Snippets folder and unzip to there.
Have a look and let me know what you think. I haven't put them through a good test yet, but they are doing well so far so any feed back appreciated.
I'm guessing most people who read this have already seen and read Custom server behaviors in DWMX over at DEVNET. Well HS+ can also do the same....well nearly, just not as powerful.
If any one has read Ray Camden's blog then he has mentioned about putting variables in HS+ snippets. But not only that you can also have the same kind of functionality as DWMX Server behaviors i.e. editable variables. Here's the how part:
For about the last week or so when ive connected to the Databases in Homesite+ its taken ages to connect to 127.0.0.1, and sometimes timing out.
I did some searching on the web and it was suggested (i cant remember where so no credit, sorry) to increase the timeout to 90. With this done it was working fine, though taking ages still to conenct. Well today i decided to get to the route of the problem.
First thing i did was go into CFADMIN, and check the connections. Oh...my..god this took ages aswell. Then i noticed one of the DSN wasnt validating, i've corrected this and viola, all is well. So the moral to my story, check your DSN's are up-to-date.
Snippets are one of the things i love about my Homesite+. At first i wasnt big into them, but slowly ive been building up a collection and now realise how usefull they are in my coding. Actually a few of them i will start to post here, but in the meantime if you love the blighters then get over to dwfaq.com/snippets/ for a good and extensive collection. There is also a newsgroup over at news://support.dwfaq.com/snippets, but i dont think anyone has posted there for while, well excpet for me wanting to find out if there are snippet variables?
This is one topic i love. There has been two good blog entries and comments recently, one is at Raymond Camden site called Wake up and smell the ide and the other one is over at Sean A Corfield blog, entitled Unbundling Homesite+. Personally im using Homesite+ 5.2, yeah there are a few little bugs but generally it works to my satisfaction. I've also downloaded DWMX 2004 and given the 30 day trial a bash (i still have 6 days left) but i just cant get into it. Personally i dont see it as a true hand coders enviroment, there's something about it which keeps making go back to HS+. Though i got to take my hat of for the WYSIWYG side of it as that has came on leaps and bounds (anyone who used UltraDev would know this), and because of this maybe i've "cheated" and knocked up a couple of big forms quickly. Either way though its just not for me, and the only reason to get my company to upgrade will be for homesite 5.5+.
Ive also just started learning Java and their IDE's full into another whole range of ............well dodginess. The college im learning Java at is using Sun ONE Studio 4. So their we are in class loading this up (this was painfully slow) and 5 minutes later we finally got going. The actual IDE is well....built in Java so runs slow(ish) and is just painful to use, with me and 3 other students all having it crash on us at least once during the lesson. But i am new to it and at the moment looking through goggle for more and maybe better ones. So if you know of any please drop me a comment and let me know :o)
